Google Sheets

Add a row in Google Sheets when a message is posted in a channel in Slack

When a message is posted in a channel in Slack, add a row in Google Sheets.

Start the 14-day trial, then find it under Templates → Library. It installs into the client you choose, switched off, with its checklist.

A message is posted in a channel in Slack, within 5 minutes

Every step, in order

When it happens in the first app, the step runs in the second, with the client’s own account.

A message is posted in a channel
A new message in a channel, checked every 5 minutes; joins and the bot’s own posts are skipped. The app needs channels:history (groups:history for a private channel) and must be in the channel.
Add a row
Add a row at the bottom of a sheet, one value per column, left to right.

What each client fills in

Google Sheets: Spreadsheet ID
For example from the URL: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/<this>/edit
Google Sheets: Sheet (tab)
For example Sheet1
Slack: Channel ID
The channel’s details → About: the ID at the bottom.

The accounts it needs

Each is the client’s own, stored encrypted and never copied between clients. Until one is added the client’s checklist shows it, and nothing runs.

  • In the client’s Slack: api.slack.com/apps → Create New App → OAuth & Permissions → add the chat:write scope (and channels:history, plus groups:history for a private channel, for the message trigger) → Install to Workspace → copy the Bot User OAuth Token. Invite the app to the channel.

  • Google Sheets

In your own Google Cloud project: enable the Google Sheets API, then IAM & Admin → Service accounts → Create → Keys → Add key → JSON, and paste the file here. Then share each client sheet with the service account’s email (…@….iam.gserviceaccount.com) as an Editor. The account is yours; no Google review is needed.

After you install it

It lands switched off. The client’s checklist holds exactly this:

  1. Connect the client’s Slack, for “A message is posted in a channel”
  2. Connect the client’s Google Sheets, for “Add a row”
  3. Fill in Slack: Channel ID (The channel’s details → About: the ID at the bottom)
  4. Fill in Google Sheets: Spreadsheet ID (For example from the URL: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/<this>/edit)
  5. Fill in Google Sheets: Sheet (tab) (For example Sheet1)
  6. Check the order of Google Sheets’s values, column by column against the client’s columns
