Send an email in SendGrid when a message is posted in a channel in Slack

When a message is posted in a channel in Slack, send an email in SendGrid.

Start the 14-day trial, then find it under Templates → Library. It installs into the client you choose, switched off, with its checklist.

UsesBeta

Every step, in order

When it happens in the first app, the step runs in the second, with the client’s own account.

A message is posted in a channel
A new message in a channel, checked every 5 minutes; joins and the bot’s own posts are skipped. The app needs channels:history (groups:history for a private channel) and must be in the channel.
Send an email
Plain-text email from a verified sender.

What each client fills in

SendGrid: From address
For example hello@northside.example
Who it goes to (SendGrid)
The address that gets it: yours, or the client’s team.
Slack: Channel ID
The channel’s details → About: the ID at the bottom.

The accounts it needs

Each is the client’s own, stored encrypted and never copied between clients. Until one is added the client’s checklist shows it, and nothing runs.

  • In the client’s Slack: api.slack.com/apps → Create New App → OAuth & Permissions → add the chat:write scope (and channels:history, plus groups:history for a private channel, for the message trigger) → Install to Workspace → copy the Bot User OAuth Token. Invite the app to the channel.

  • SendGrid → Settings → API Keys → Create API Key with Mail Send access; for the triggers, also the Event Webhook settings permission (user.webhooks.event.settings.read and user.webhooks.event.settings.update), or Full Access. The From address must be a verified sender.

After you install it

It lands switched off. The client’s checklist holds exactly this:

  1. Connect the client’s Slack, for “A message is posted in a channel”
  2. Connect the client’s SendGrid, for “Send an email”
  3. Fill in Slack: Channel ID (The channel’s details → About: the ID at the bottom)
  4. Fill in SendGrid: From address (For example hello@northside.example)
  5. Fill in Who it goes to (SendGrid) (The address that gets it: yours, or the client’s team)

Thrum is cooking.
